Digital Camera: Making Sense Of Resolution

Area resolution is the main concern when using a digital camera. This will tell you how much data you have available and will impact the size of your image.

Some people think megapixels affect sharpness. Sharpness is not necessarily affected by megapixels. As few as 3 megapixels can create a sharp image and as many as 6 can result in one that is unsharp.

Increasing resolution will provide more detail when needed for larger prints. You really only need 2 megapixels for quality prints up to 5x7 inches. 3 megapixels are good up to 8x10 inch prints and 8 megapixels for 16x20 inch prints.

When purchasing a digital camera, concentrate on the features you desire and the megapixels will be automatically provided the more advanced the camera you choose.
