Digital
Camera: Levels Control
Your digital camera Levels
control allows you to avoid a dull photo by setting the black and
white parameters for a good solid black. If not the tonalities will
vary and will cause colors to be weak. Images take with digital
cameras will often have this problem.
Simply follow the graph,
or histogram, and make sure you are using a complete range of black
and white. You can immediately see the distribution of brightness
from black to white with the Levels control.
For the best result the
histogram should start rising at the far left and end at the far
right with no gaps or overextensions on on either side. Having a
gap on the right edge will cause highlights in the photo to be more
gray than white. To adjust simply move the slider until there is
no gap and until the white slider is under the descending end of
the histogram.
You can also move the
slider of both the black and white to achieve more contrast. Simply
place more emphasis on the dark areas or light areas of the photo
as desired.
The third slider beneath
the histogram with a gray triangle is to adjust the midtones of
the hoto to be brightened or darkened. without affecting the black
or white tonalities.
The Levels control is
a powerful way to deal with photos from your digital camera.
